Andy Murray Advances to Second Round of Canadian Open after Defeating Lorenzo Sonego

Andy Murray Advances to Second Round of Canadian Open

In a blustery match held at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto, Andy Murray showcased his skills as he triumphed over Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets. The victory secured his place in the second round of the Canadian Open.

The Scot, aged 36 and a three-time Grand Slam winner, had previously claimed victory at this tournament in both 2009 and back-to-back years in 2010 and 2015. Reflecting on his performance against Sonego, Murray expressed satisfaction with his ability to overcome challenges faced during the match.

“I managed to sneak through the tie-break and after that he was obviously a bit disappointed, and I relaxed a little bit,” said Murray.

A nail-biting first set saw Murray save two set points while serving at 5-4. Additionally, he found himself down two points during the tie-break before eventually securing an arduous first-set win after a grueling eighty-eight minutes.

In contrast to the intensity of the previous set, Murray dominated the second set comfortably by breaking Sonego’s serve early on and capitalizing on further opportunities for breaks. This allowed him to swiftly secure match point when presented with it for only one time throughout their encounter.

Murray now looks forward to facing either Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada or Australia’s Max Purcell in his upcoming matchup at this year’s Canadian Open. Despite acknowledging that his past successes at the tournament occurred many years ago, Murray remains hopeful for a chance to build momentum and potentially recreate those memorable moments.
