Andy Murray parts ways with coach Ivan Lendl for the third occasion

Former World Number One Andy Murray Ends Partnership with Coach Ivan Lendl

In a surprising turn of events, former world number one tennis player, Andy Murray, and his esteemed coach Ivan Lendl have decided to end their partnership for the third time. The announcement comes as preparations for the upcoming 2024 season are underway.

Murray, who reappointed Lendl last year after their previous successful collaboration, expressed his gratitude towards his coach. “Ivan has been an integral part of my career and I am incredibly thankful for all that he has helped me achieve,” said Murray. He further added, “His unique approach to the game and his winning mentality have taught me invaluable lessons throughout our time together.”

This dynamic duo had previously worked together during some of Murray’s most memorable triumphs. Under Lendl’s guidance, Murray clinched two Wimbledon titles, the prestigious US Open in 2012, and secured two Olympic gold medals.

Their partnership initially came to an end in 2014 when they faced a disagreement over scheduling commitments. It was clear that eight-time Grand Slam champion Lendl couldn’t commit to the extensive time on tour required by Murray.

However, destiny brought them back together in 2016 when they rejoined forces just before Murray won his second Wimbledon title and achieved the coveted top spot in the world rankings at year-end.

Their reunion was short-lived as injury struck; in November of the following year,Murray suffered from a serious hip injury that required two surgeries and limited his playing time. Consequently, the partnership concluded once again.

Despite the challenges they faced, Lendl and Murray decided to give it another shot in March 2022. Murray expressed his gratitude for Lendl’s unwavering belief in him during these difficult times.

This season, however, their collaboration has been primarily focused on Grand Slam events due to limited opportunities caused by various factors.

As this chapter comes to an end, both Murray and Lendl reflect on their experiences together with fondness. “Andy is one of the hardest working athletes I have ever worked with,” acknowledged Lendl. He further commented, “The sport will undoubtedly miss his presence. I wish him all the best moving forward.”

Mark Hilton and Jonny O’Mara, who have been a part of Murray’s coaching team alongside Lendl this year, wil now assume shared coaching duties as they continue supporting the British player in his future endeavors.
