Constitution Hill prepared for Kempton comeback

Superstar Duo Finally Set to Shine at Kempton

Renowned horse trainer Nicky Henderson is eager to put a frustrating period behind him as he prepares to unveil two highly anticipated horses, Constitution Hill and Shishkin, at Kempton on Boxing Day.

This season has been marked by disappointment for the duo, with both horses yet to make their competitive debut. Critics have not held back in criticizing Henderson’s cautious approach. However, extenuating circumstances justify the delay.

The weather played spoilsport for Constitution Hill’s intended defense of the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle. Similarly, Shishkin created quite a spectacle at Ascot’s 1965 Chase when he refused to jump off with other runners after reaching the starting line.

Henderson made an attempt to reschedule their races by entering them into the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Sandown. However, due to testing conditions that left many disappointed fans and punters alike, both horses were withdrawn from the race.

In hindsight, it was a straightforward decision according to Henderson: “You couldn’t run at Sandown and Kempton. It was physically not possible.” He emphasized that sacrificing one race for another was necessary but seemed frustrated with people failing to grasp this concept entirely.

Despite these setbacks, Henderson remains confident in Constitution Hill’s ability as he aims for back-to-back Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle wins. The lack of recent competition does not concern him overly; instead, he wants his six-year-old charge to perform well at Kempton before making further plans.

Looking ahead, Henderson mentioned the possibility of Constitution Hill participating in the International Hurdle at Cheltenham on Trials Day and later aiming for the Champion Hurdle. Aintree is also on their radar, but a trip to Ireland for the Dublin Racing Festival is unlikely.

While Constitution Hill appears to have an unflappable temperament, Shishkin’s behavior has been a cause for concern since his refusal at Ascot. However, Henderson believes that as the season progresses, Shishkin tends to improve: “When he is fresh, he is a bit of a plonker!”

To address this issue, Henderson sent Shishkin to work with Zara Tindall in order to refine his manners and focus on dressage work. The training was aimed at curbing any unwanted behaviors and establishing a solid foundation for future races.

Nicky Henderson’s excitement for Kempton on Boxing Day is palpable as he prepares to showcase his talented duo after months of setbacks. As fans eagerly await their debut performances, all eyes will be on Constitution Hill and Shishkin as they aim to deliver thrilling displays of athleticism and skill.
