Doncaster Recap: Iberian Dominates the Champagne Race

Iberian Shines in Betfred Champagne Stakes | Annaf Prevails in Thrilling Finish

Impressive Victory for Iberian at Doncaster

In a thrilling display of star potential, Iberian emerged victorious in the prestigious Betfred Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. Trained by Charlie Hills, this talented colt had already caught the attention with an impressive debut at Newbury. However, his lack of experience hindered him during the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood where he finished second to Haatem.

Undeterred by this setback, connections remained confident in their exciting son of Lope De Vega. Going head-to-head with Richard Hannon’s unbeaten Rosallion on Town Moor, Iberian proved his class. Jockey Tom Marquand shadowed the favorite throughout the race but when push came to shove, it was Iberian who showcased his electric turn of foot. Taking control a furlong from home, he surged ahead to win comfortably by two lengths over runner-up Sunway.

Last year’s winner Chaldean went on to secure victories in the Dewhurst Stakes and 2000 Guineas. It seems that Iberian is destined for similar success as bookmakers offer low odds for his future endeavors. He is currently priced at 8-1 (from 16s) for Newmarket’s end-of-season juvenile Group One and 20-1 for the opening Classic of 2024.

Hills expressed delight with Iberian’s performance stating: “That was just what the doctor ordered! He’s a very exciting horse. He has an electric turn of foot and put the race to bed very well. His work at home has been unbelievable, and today he showed that on the racecourse.”

Reflecting on Iberian’s learning experience at Goodwood, Hills added: “Inexperience caught him out that day, but he finished well. When the ground is quicker, I believe we’ll see an even better horse.” With confidence in his ability to handle longer distances, Hills stated: “Why can’t he be a Guineas horse? He’ll get a mile no problem.”

    Annaf Triumphs Against All Odds

The Betfred Portland Handicap witnessed an extraordinary performance by Annaf as he defied top-weight to secure victory in a thrilling finish. Trained by Mick Appleby, this four-year-old gelding had previously competed in Group races including a third-place finish in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Despite being winless on turf before this race, Annaf proved his class with jockey Rossa Ryan guiding him expertly through a crowded field. The duo displayed exceptional teamwork and determination as they edged past Julie Camacho’s Significantly to claim victory by the narrowest of margins.

Mick Appleby celebrated another triumph following his success with Big Evs in the Flying Childers earlier this week. Speaking about Annaf’s achievement, Ryan commented: “He was third in the King’s Stand don’t forget! He’s been good to me throughout my rides. My only concern today was the ground conditions but he handled it well.”

Ryan further expressed his admiration for Annaf stating: “He’s been a star for me. Mick and the team have him spot-on every time.” Referring to Annaf’s dislike of leading for too long, Ryan added: “All-weather racing suits him better.”

    Conclusion

The Betfred Champagne Stakes showcased Iberian’s star potential as he dominated his rivals with an impressive victory. With lofty aspirations for future Group One races and even the Guineas, this talented colt is one to watch.

In a remarkable finish, Annaf defied all odds to secure victory in the Betfred Portland Handicap. Mick Appleby’s top-weight gelding displayed class and determination, cementing his status as a rising star in the racing world.
