Gary Moore Honors the Legacy of Sire De Grugy

Renowned racehorse Sire De Grugy has sadly passed away at the age of 17, leaving a lasting impact on the world of National Hunt racing. Gary Moore, his trainer and father of jockey Jamie Moore, paid heartfelt tribute to the champion who captured hearts throughout his career.

During seven incredible seasons filled with exhilarating moments, Sire de Grugy notched up an impressive record with 17 victories out of 42 races. He achieved greatness by triumphing in five prestigious events at the highest level.

The pinnacle of his career came during the 2013-14 season when he propelled both Gary and Jamie Moore into Group One stardom. The remarkable duo celebrated their crowning glory at Cheltenham Festival’s winner’s enclosure after a breathtaking six-length victory over Somersby in that year’s Champion Chase.

Sire De Grugy was owned by the Preston family throughout his illustrious racing journey. His final triumphant moment occurred in November 2016 when he secured a thrilling Ascot handicap win just before bidding farewell to competitive racing. In December 2017, he made one last appearance at Cheltenham – where he had previously tasted sweet success – as a nostalgic goodbye.

In retirement, Sire De Grugy remained close to Jamie and Gary Moore. A specially built stable provided him comfort while enjoying well-deserved rest time under their care.
“He meant the world to us, not only as a remarkable racehorse but also as a beloved friend,” expressed Moore. “In his later years, he brought immeasurable joy to our grandchildren and Jamie’s wife. He was truly an extraordinary horse.”
Reflecting on their special bond, Moore added, “Jamie built him a magnificent yard and some paddocks. Since retiring, Sire De Grugy received exceptional care. We did everything we could for his recovery, but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.
“He achieved feats that I have yet to witness in another horse. Steve Preston was his owner; we had tremendous fun together because there are very few horses like Sire De Grugy.”

During the unforgettable 2013-14 campaign, Sire De Grugy displayed his dominance by securing five consecutive wins in graded chases. Alongside his Champion Chase triumph at Cheltenham Festival, he also claimed victory in Sandown’s Tingle Creek and Celebration Chase races with outstanding performances. Additionally, he triumphed by an astonishing 11-length margin in Ascot’s Clarence House Chase.

Recalling those halcyon days of greatness fondly, Gary Moore particularly cherishes Sire De Grugy’s demolition of Somersby during one of two Tingle Creek victories at Sandown Park – an accomplishment that stands out amidst numerous highlights.
“Cheltenham provided an immensely special day with everyone present; those moments must be cherished because they are rare,” said Moore. “However, my favorite memory would have to be the Tingle Creek race and the sheer brilliance displayed by Sire De Grugy.”
Moore further highlighted their shared success: “When he won the Celebration Chase after claiming victory in the Champion Chase – it was nothing short of remarkable considering how exhausted he was from previous exertions.”
Praising his exceptional ability, Moore concluded, “Every single day of that season was extraordinary. Sire De Grugy was a unique and incomparable talent.”
