Giovinco poised for Kauto Star at Kempton Park

Giovinco set for Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day

In a thrilling clash with Stay Away Fay at Sandown last week, Giovinco came off second best and is now eyeing the prestigious Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day. The race turned into an exhilarating showdown between two of the most promising staying novices in the country.

Despite appearing to have the upper hand for much of the home straight, Lucinda Russell’s Giovinco was ultimately outlasted by Paul Nicholls-trained Stay Away Fay in testing conditions. Speaking about Giovinco’s preparation leading up to Sandown, Peter Scudamore, partner and assistant to trainer Lucinda Russell, revealed that there were some setbacks along the way but remains hopeful for a better performance on the King George undercard.

“I think he’ll go to Kempton on Boxing Day. He hadn’t had a straight run to get to Sandown,” Scudamore told Racing TV. “I thought Stephen (Mulqueen) gave him an exceptional ride and he jumped brilliantly.”

“Although I was disappointed with not winning given how well he was going three out and two out, finishing close behind Stay Away Fay exceeded my expectations,” added Scudamore. “When you watch him cantering from three out, it felt like victory was within reach.”

The upcoming challenge at Kempton Racecourse presents new opportunities for Giovinco as it offers a slightly easier track compared to Sandown. Scudamore anticipates tough competition from Noel George’s French horse, Il Est Francais, and believes Paul Nicholls has another strong contender in Knappers Hill.

“It won’t be an easy race, but we have limited options for these horses,” stated Scudamore with a touch of resignation. “Let’s hope we can better prepare Giovinco for Kempton and give him the chance to shine.”
