The Goodwood Races: Abandoned after a Track Inspection
Unforeseen circumstances led to the cancellation of the final three races on Saturday’s Goodwood card. An inspection was conducted following the Coral Stewards’ Cup, where officials, trainers, and jockeys went out to assess track conditions. Concerns were raised about the bend into the home straight.
In particular, attention was drawn to the state of the going on the round course during the Lillie Langtry Stakes at 3pm. The race took place amidst a relentless downpour that left some jockeys questioning whether it was safe for further competition.
Although there wasn’t an issue with running races on the straight course like in the Stewards’ Cup, all remaining races were set to be run around a bend. This prompted Ed Arkell, director of racing at Goodwood, to provide insight into their decision.
“The jockeys expressed concerns after witnessing certain areas of uncertainty on the bend during previous races,” Arkell revealed in an interview with Racing TV. “While they were content racing on straight courses—thus allowing us to proceed with the Stewards’ Cup—we had no choice but to evaluate and address potential complications stemming from bends.”
Unfortunately, upon closer examination by officials and experts alike, an area of false ground was discovered on one specific part of Goodwood’s bottom bend—a challenge unmanageable enough that running any more races became impossible.
This unprecedented turn of events brought about an abrupt conclusion to what should have been five days filled with thrilling horse racing action—the Qatar Goodwood Festival fixture now cut short due to unforeseen circumstances beyond anyone’s control.
Acknowledging these unexpected challenges faced throughout this eventful week-long festival, Arkell extended his gratitude towards the team responsible for maintaining the track. “None of us desired this abrupt end to the meeting,” he stated. “I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated groundstaff for their unwavering efforts.”
