Haggas considers Melbourne as a possibility for Desert Hero

Desert Hero Takes on the Challenge of the Lexus Melbourne Cup

In a bid to keep all options open for his St Leger third, trainer William Haggas is ready to embark on the vetting procedure for Desert Hero’s participation in the prestigious Lexus Melbourne Cup.

The promising racehorse, owned by none other than the King and Queen themselves, put up an admirable performance at Doncaster over the weekend, finishing just over three lengths behind Continuous. With odds placed at 12-1 for the Flemington feature on November 7th, Desert Hero has captured significant attention from racing enthusiasts.

Racing Victoria has implemented strict veterinary checks for international runners competing in this two-mile contest. Understanding these protocols well, Haggas intends to initiate them with Desert Hero. However, it should be noted that clearing these checks does not guarantee final confirmation of participation.

Haggas shared during an interview: “We want to leave no stone unturned and keep our possibilities wide open. Hence we will subject Desert Hero to rigorous veterinary tests.”

A series of MRIs are scheduled over the next couple of days as part of this process before collating all information and making a decision. The upcoming release of weights also plays a crucial role in determining whether or not they proceed with their plans.

Expressing his thoughts on their recent experience at Doncaster where both King and Queen were present to witness Desert Hero’s valiant effort despite the defeat, Haggas remarked: “It was an extraordinary day filled with a massive crowd and their tremendous enthusiasm. The presence of the King and Queen itself was unexpected and truly heartwarming.”

As avid supporters of horse racing, the King and Queen have taken over from the late Queen’s racing interests following her passing. Desert Hero has already given them a taste of success when he triumphed in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this year.

Haggas also mentioned how impressed he is with the King’s evident passion for horse racing, stating: “He seems to thoroughly enjoy his involvement. Although it was initially his mother’s domain, he has embraced it wholeheartedly since she departed.”

The anticipation leading up to Saturday’s race at Doncaster had everyone feeling a mix of excitement and nervous tension. Haggas shared that discussions about Desert Hero were ongoing amongst various parties involved, all hoping for a positive outcome.
