Insight from Those Involved: Matron Stakes Perspectives

All Eyes on Tahiyra in Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes

The anticipation is palpable as the highly talented filly, Tahiyra, prepares to make her return in the prestigious Coolmore America “Justify” Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday. With an impressive win in the Moyglare Stud Stakes last year and back-to-back victories in the Irish Guineas and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot this season, Dermot Weld’s star filly has proven herself as a force to be reckoned with.

Tahiyra’s jockey, Chris Hayes, is optimistic about her chances and believes she can continue her winning streak. Despite not having raced since Royal Ascot, Hayes feels that Tahiyra is ready to pick up where she left off. He describes riding her as being in slow motion due to how effortlessly she handles any pace.

While Tahiyra may not be at peak fitness after a three-month break, Hayes notes that she has physically improved and has strengthened since earlier this year. Although facing competition from stablemate Homeless Songs – who won last year’s Irish 1,000 Guineas – Hayes remains confident in their chances.

“My filly is quite versatile,” says Hayes. “We both like a fast pace and with some luck during the race, I believe both fillies will represent our team well.”

Homeless Songs poses a significant threat to Tahiyra despite not having raced for several months. However, if conditions remain hot and sunny without additional watering from Leopardstown Racecourse officials which would result in firmer ground than anticipated by trainer Paddy Twomey for Homeless Songs’ liking – it might affect her decision whether or not to run her.

In addition to the Moyglare Stud Farm’s contender, Homeless Songs, Just Beautiful is another horse entered for the owners. Just Beautiful showcased her talent earlier this year with a victory in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Trainer Paddy Twomey has been preparing Just Beautiful specifically for this race and believes she will excel on Leopardstown’s track.

“Just Beautiful loves fast ground,” explains Fiona Craig of Moyglare Stud Farm. “She had some setbacks after we acquired her, but her last run on fast ground proved she can handle it well. We have high expectations for her at Leopardstown.”

It’s worth noting that Tahiyra receives a weight allowance of 5lb from both Homeless Songs and Just Beautiful, which could play a significant role in determining the outcome of the race.
