Insights from Those Involved in the Sussex Stakes

Paddington and Inspiral Set for Clash in Qatar Sussex Stakes

In a season that has seen many breakout stars, Paddington is undoubtedly one of the standouts. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, this exceptional racehorse’s campaign is reminiscent of the legendary Giant’s Causeway from Ballydoyle. Just like the ‘Iron Horse’, Paddington has shown remarkable versatility throughout his races.

This time, he faces another test as he prepares to take on the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. After starting with a win in a handicap race earlier this season, Paddington is now aiming for his fourth consecutive Group One victory. He showcased his brilliance by winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas before defeating Chaldean in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. In his most recent outing, he conquered Emily Upjohn to claim victory in Eclipse over 10 furlongs.

However, for this upcoming race at Goodwood, Paddington will be dropping back to a mile distance and facing tough competition from Inspiral. The weather forecast predicts substantial rain during Tuesday evening into Wednesday – but O’Brien remains unfazed about ground conditions affecting his talented colt.

“He’s got winning form on very soft ground so I wouldn’t be as concerned for him as I might have been for other horses,” said O’Brien confidently.

O’Brien holds high regard for Paddington due to his natural ability, speediness, and straightforwardness. This horse’s progression from one run to another has been quite extraordinary according to O’Brien: “He has been putting on weight after every run. He was much heavier heading into the Eclipse than he was before Ascot, which is quite unusual. He thrives on work and everyone involved with him is very happy.”

The comparisons to Giant’s Causeway are hard to ignore, as O’Brien notes: “He looks a serious horse at the moment.” Giant’s Causeway also won the St James’s Palace, Eclipse, Sussex Stakes, Juddmonte International, and Irish Champion Stakes – all races that could potentially feature in Paddington’s future plans.

    Inspiral Poses a Worthy Challenge

John and Thady Gosden-trained Inspiral presents herself as Paddington’s strongest market rival yet again. This four-year-old filly owned by Cheveley Park Stud boasts an impressive record of six wins out of nine races, including three Group One victories.

“The ground is changing but this has been the plan and she is on course to go to Goodwood,” stated Chris Richardson, racing manager for Inspiral’s owners.

While Inspiral brings her own set of strengths to the table with her weight advantage due to age restrictions in place for this race category (weight-for-age difference), doubts arise regarding her performance on soft ground if rain persists.

“Heavy ground wouldn’t suit her,” Richardson admitted cautiously. “We have taken the chance and more rain would suit Paddington probably more perhaps…”

A Prestigious Race Steeped in History

The Qatar Sussex Stakes holds great significance within the racing world as it stands as a prestigious race that has stood the test of time. For young horses like Paddington taking on older milers for their first time at stud, this race becomes even more important.

“The Sussex Stakes is a very prestigious race that has stood the test of time. For a horse going to stud, it is very important with it being the first time the three-year-olds can take on the older milers,” O’Brien emphasized.

As Goodwood approaches and uncertainty looms over ground conditions, all eyes will be on Paddington and Inspiral as they prepare for their highly anticipated clash. The outcome of this race could potentially shape both horses’ future plans in pursuit of further glory on the turf.
