Italian jockey, Frankie Dettori, will be unable to compete in the prestigious Eclipse Stakes as his suspension is confirmed.

Frankie Dettori to Miss Coral-Eclipse Ride After Failed Appeal

Famous jockey Frankie Dettori will unfortunately not be able to ride Emily Upjohn in the upcoming Coral-Eclipse race. This is due to his unsuccessful appeal against a nine-day ban for careless riding during his previous race on Saga at Royal Ascot.

Dettori’s incident occurred when he attempted to switch right-handed towards the rail during the Wolferton Stakes. In doing so, he caused James McDonald, who was riding Cadillac, to quickly react and pull back. This sudden maneuver also hampered Certain Lad and Notre Belle Bete, who were following behind Cadillac.

Saga, owned by the King and Queen and trained by John and Thady Gosden, finished fifth in the 10-furlong Listed event that day. The race was ultimately won by Royal Champion.

An independent disciplinary panel of the British Horseracing Authority carefully reviewed all evidence from relevant parties involved in the incident before making their decision. Despite Dettori’s representations, they upheld the original charge of careless riding that had been determined by stewards on the first day of Royal Ascot.

The panel then took into consideration submissions from Dettori’s legal representative requesting a reduction in penalty but decided that a nine-day ban was appropriate. They made no amendment to this sanction.
