Jamie Moore announces retirement from professional riding

Cheltenham Festival-Winning Jockey Jamie Moore Retires Due to Medical Advice

Renowned jockey Jamie Moore, who clinched victory at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival, has made the heartfelt decision to step away from his illustrious career in horse racing. The 39-year-old rider, hailing from a family deeply rooted in the sport with trainer Gary and siblings Josh, Ryan, and Hayley also making their mark in the industry, cited medical advice following a fall last year as the reason for his retirement.

Moore’s journey in the world of horse racing began back in 2001. A standout moment came when he emerged as the champion conditional rider at the conclusion of the 2003-04 season while under Martin Pipe’s tutelage in Somerset. It was during this period that he secured significant wins in graded events that laid a strong foundation for his future successes.

The partnership between Moore and the beloved chestnut Sire De Grugy blossomed into something truly special, culminating in their memorable triumph at Cheltenham by winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2014 – one among an impressive tally of 17 victories where Moore guided Sire De Grugy to glory each time.

Over his remarkable career, Moore celebrated riding a total of 968 winners. One of his standout achievements includes clinching victory at the Scottish Grand National aboard Al Co for trainer Peter Bowen during that same outstanding season when Sire De Grugy dominated Grade One races and earned acclaim as British Jumps Horse of t…

In November last year, Moore faced a severe setback after sustaining serious injuries from a heavy fall at Lingfield. His injuries included a fractured vertebra along with broken ribs and nose. Subsequent consultations with top neurologists and spinal specialists led to him receiving medical advice advising against returning to competitive race riding due to these sustained injuries.

In an emotional statement released through Professional Jockeys Association (PJA), Moore expressed deep gratitude towards everyone who supported him throughout his sensational 22-year tenure on tracks across various competitions. He acknowledged his father Gary’s unwavering support alongside owners loyal to their stable.

“It is impossible to adequately express my appreciation,” shared Moore; “I have been fortunate enough not only be guided by my esteemed father but also had tremendous backing from devoted owners.”
