Jockey Oisin Murphy secured for mount on Via Sistina

Via Sistina to Target Qipco Champion Stakes with Oisin Murphy as Partner

Trainer George Boughey has confirmed that star mare Via Sistina will be partnered by jockey Oisin Murphy for the much-anticipated Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. The talented five-year-old, daughter of Fastnet Rock, has been in exceptional form this season.

After a stunning victory in the Group Two Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket earlier this year, Via Sistina went on to secure Group One glory in the Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland. She then showed her consistency by finishing placed in the Falmouth Stakes and narrowly missing out on a win by just a nose in the Prix Jean Romanet in France.

Via Sistina’s connections initially considered entering her into the Prix de l’Opera during Arc weekend, but decided against it due to unfavourable fast ground conditions. With rain forecasted at Ascot this coming weekend, however, Boughey plans to run his star mare against male competitors on British Champions Day.

The trainer’s regular rider Jamie Spencer is currently abroad riding another horse, so he called upon three-time champion jockey Oisin Murphy to step up and take the reins. It seems like an ideal partnership for what promises to be an exciting race.

Boughey Confident about Optimum Trip and Ground Conditions

Boughey believes that running Via Sistina over ten furlongs (mile and a quarter) will suit her perfectly. Furthermore, if the expected rain arrives, the ground conditions will be in her favor. The trainer expressed his satisfaction with the decision to wait for Ascot, as it offers a better opportunity for Via Sistina.

While there is an alternative option of entering the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes over a mile and a half, Boughey feels that the Champion Stakes is the right fit for his talented mare given the potential increase in runners and potential complications in her alternative race.

Via Sistina has shown her best form when given enough time between races. Her standout performance this year was on very soft ground at Newmarket after a long break during winter. She currently looks fit and fresh, ready to take on whatever challenges lie ahead at Ascot.

A Small but Select Boughey Team Set for Ascot

Beyond Via Sistina’s participation in the Qipco Champion Stakes, Boughey also plans to field Believing in the Qipco British Champions Sprint. Additionally, Baradar and Raadobarg are set to compete in the concluding Balmoral Handicap.

Baradar’s trip may present some uncertainty due to its length; however, he has previously performed well under William Buick’s guidance and handles softer ground conditions effectively. On another note, Raadobarg has demonstrated resilience throughout his racing career and seems to have recovered superbly from his recent third-place finish in Darley Stakes.

    Expectations High Despite Challenging Conditions

Boughey acknowledges that while Baradar faces challenges regarding distance coverage during this race, he remains optimistic about their chances based on past performances. Similarly priced at larger odds compared to other contenders,

With Ascot’s prestigious race day just around the corner, Boughey’s talented team is ready to take on whatever comes their way. Although uncertainties and obstacles may arise during the event, their determination and preparation will undoubtedly play a significant role in achieving success.
