Kennedy expected to compete in Teahupoo at Stayers’ Hurdle

Gordon Elliott’s Expectations for Teahupoo and Irish Point at Cheltenham Festival

Gordon Elliott anticipates stable jockey Jack Kennedy will lean towards riding Teahupoo over Irish Point in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle at the upcoming Cheltenham Festival. Last year, Teahupoo finished third in the Grade One event by just three-quarters of a length, while his lesser-fancied teammate Sire Du Berlais caused an upset.

Teahupoo has only raced once this season, triumphing over Impaire Et Passe in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse last December. Elliott is confident about Teahupoo’s chances and expects Kennedy to partner with him for the race.

Elliott mentioned, “He’s a proven stayer and we’ve prepared him well for this race. I’d be surprised if Jack doesn’t choose to ride him.” He also hinted at potential future plans for Teahupoo after Cheltenham.

The Close Competition between Teahupoo and Irish Point

Teahupoo and Irish Point are closely matched in the betting odds for the Stayers’ Hurdle. While Irish Point showcased his abilities with a dominant performance in Leopardstown’s Christmas Hurdle over three miles, he also has the option of competing in the Champion Hurdle if conditions favor it.

Elliott expressed, “If ground conditions turn very soft, there is a possibility that we might consider running him in the Champion Hurdle instead.” The trainer believes that better ground conditions could enhance Irish Point’s chances in the Stayers’ Hurdle despite concerns about distance suitability.

Potential Jockeys and Additional Runners

If Kennedy opts to ride Teahupoo, Jordan Gainford or Sam Ewing may ride Irish Point instead. Additionally, Elliott could field four runners in the Stayers’ Hurdle including Sire Du Berlais and Beacon Edge. Although Sire Du Berlais faced a defeat recently after a long break from racing, his past successes make him a contender worth considering according to Elliott.
