Mapping Out the Festival Route of Marine Nationale

Barry Connell’s Marine Nationale has the rest of his season mapped out after a perfect start to his chasing career.

The remarkable gelding, known for his flawless performances in bumpers and over hurdles, is set to continue his winning streak. Last season, he triumphed in two National Hunt Flat starts before securing three successive novice hurdle races. Notably, he dominated Grade One level races such as the Royal Bond at Fairyhouse and the Supreme at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival, where he left Facile Vega trailing behind.

Recently making his much-anticipated chasing debut in a beginners’ contest at Leopardstown on December 27th, Marine Nationale showcased an impeccable performance under jockey Michael O’Sullivan. The pair stormed home with an impressive eight-and-a-half-length victory.

As for future plans, Connell has charted out an exciting route for this exceptional bay gelding. The upcoming Irish Arkle will be followed by appearances in the Arkle Chase and ultimately concluding with the Punchestown Festival – a thrilling schedule indeed! Speaking about Marine Nationale’s progress towards these events, Connell expressed utmost satisfaction: “We couldn’t be happier with the way he’s come out of the race… He jumped great, never made a mistake.”

The trainer further revealed that Marine Nationale had enjoyed some well-deserved rest but would resume training immediately: “He’ll start back riding out tomorrow.” With only three weeks until Dublin Racing Festival’s Irish Arkle meet-up commences next weekend – preparations are underway!

In terms of ground suitability, Connell emphasized that while they wouldn’t want bottomless conditions for their star performer, Marine Nationale has proven his versatility on various types of ground. The trainer confidently stated, “He has proven he can run on any ground… He’s probably a bit more ground versatile than we thought.”

With Marine Nationale’s current contentment and form, Connell eagerly anticipates the upcoming Dublin Racing Festival. After that, the talented gelding will head straight to Cheltenham for the highly esteemed Arkle Chase.

The seven-year-old bay had much to prove in this season’s debut as expectations were high. Yet, he managed to not only meet but surpass them with his flawless jumping skills and confident performance. Reflecting on this achievement, Connell noted: “Even if you’re Constitution Hill… you kind of have to go back to basics and prove yourself all over again.”

Looking ahead, Connell is optimistic about Marine Nationale’s chances at Cheltenham: “I think that’s probably justified based on what he’s achieved so far.”
