    Muir reveals Pyledriver’s retirement decision

William Muir Calls Time on Pyledriver’s Racing Career after Unfortunate Setback

In a surprising turn of events, renowned trainer William Muir has made the difficult decision to retire his prized horse, Pyledriver. This six-year-old stallion has had an illustrious career marred by numerous setbacks and injuries.

Pyledriver’s racing journey was nothing short of extraordinary, having triumphed in prestigious races such as the 2021 Coronation Cup at Epsom and last year’s King George at Ascot. Despite battling through adversity, this remarkable horse consistently delivered unforgettable moments for his connections.

The fire within Pyledriver still burned brightly when he made a triumphant return from an 11-month hiatus in June by winning the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. This victory marked his second success at the esteemed event following his win in the King Edward VII Stakes three years prior. However, his attempt to defend his King George crown ended with a respectable fifth-place finish in July.

A potential appearance at Kempton for the Unibet September Stakes was on the horizon for Pyledriver before heading towards a potential tilt at Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Unfortunately, fate had other plans as Muir discovered a setback that led him to make this tough retirement call.

“Just when we thought our champion couldn’t shine any brighter,” remarked Muir emotionally upon reflecting on Pyledriver’s final workout. “He moved with an indescribable grace, commanding the attention of all who witnessed it. He left the gallops with a regal stride, reminiscent of a mighty lion.” Muir continued to explain how the initial excitement turned into concern as Pyledriver showed signs of soreness upon his return to the yard. Having consulted their veterinarian, it was revealed that Pyledriver had aggravated a previous suspensory injury and exhibited inflammation in that area. Despite this setback, Pyledriver displayed his unyielding spirit by being sound and full of energy on Saturday morning during routine checks. The horse was even seen bucking and kicking joyfully at times. However, Muir’s unwavering love for animals and deep respect for Pyledriver prompted him to reconsider running the horse again. Concerned about potential further damage or compensatory injuries due to favoring one leg over another, Muir decided that retiring Pyledriver now is the most compassionate choice.

Muir acknowledged the incredible contribution that Pyledriver has made not only to himself but also to its owners, jockeys who have ridden him, and everyone associated with the yard.

“Pyledriver has been an exceptional servant throughout his career,” said Muir solemnly. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a high-profile runner or one from a smaller event – when I see any animal in need or at risk, my responsibility is clear: we must prioritize their well-being.”

With heavy hearts but steadfast conviction in doing what is right for their beloved champion horse, William Muir bids farewell to Pyledriver as he embarks on retirement.
