No concerns about Bay Bridge’s chances in defending Champion Stakes title

Bay Bridge Unfazed Ahead of Qipco Champion Stakes Defense

In a remarkable display, Bay Bridge’s connections remain unperturbed by the conditions at Ascot as they prepare for the defense of his Qipco Champion Stakes crown on Saturday. Trained by the esteemed Sir Michael Stoute, this five-year-old sensation delivered a career-best performance to end Baaeed’s unbeaten streak in last season’s Group One feature. Now, Bay Bridge returns to British Champions Day with hopes of replicating that extraordinary half-length victory under jockey Richard Kingscote.

The triumph occurred on good-to-soft ground, but considering Bay Bridge’s impressive second-place finish on firm ground at Royal Ascot last year, it seems there are few concerns about the track conditions. However, if heavy rain is predicted and turns the course into sodden terrain, there may be a switch to Ascot’s inner track.

“If he can go back and defend his crown, that would be wonderful,” expressed John O’Connor from Ballylinch Stud who co-owns Bay Bridge alongside James Wigan. “At present, our intention is to run – pending Sir Michael Stoute’s final decision. As far as I know, he was satisfied with him when we last spoke and plans still point towards Ascot on Saturday.”

With excellent form displayed across varying ground at Ascot over previous races including summer courses like good-to-firm surfaces; Lady Luck appears firmly in favor of Bay Bridge as he strives for another momentous victory. Last year saw him narrowly miss out on glory in the Prince of Wales’s race due to a touch-and-go finish.

John O’Connor further added, “We don’t know which track they will race on, but we’ll simply comply with the instructions given. We’re ready for whichever path is set before us.”

    A Proven Performer

Bay Bridge has consistently proven himself in some of the most intense 10-furlong contests. However, he recently ventured into uncharted territory by trying his luck at a mile and a half in the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The son of New Bay admirably finished sixth behind Ace Impact in Europe’s richest middle-distance event. Yet, Bay Bridge’s eagerness to hold an early position ultimately took its toll during the final stages of that grueling competition.

Despite this setback, reports indicate that Bay Bridge has returned from Paris rejuvenated and ready for his preferred distance as he gears up for Champions Day.

“He seems to have recovered well after the Arc and performed impressively throughout,” revealed O’Connor with confidence. “For now, our sights are firmly set on Ascot – hoping he maintains his exceptional form.”
