O’Sullivan thrilled for Marine Nationale adventure

Michael O’Sullivan Set for Marine Nationale’s Chasing Debut

In what has been an extraordinary year for Michael O’Sullivan, the young Irishman is preparing to end 2023 on a high note as his talented horse, Marine Nationale, makes his much-anticipated chasing debut at Leopardstown. Having turned professional just over a year ago and joining forces with up-and-coming handler Barry Connell, O’Sullivan has achieved remarkable success on the big stage.

Connell’s horses Good Land and Espanito Bello have provided notable triumphs for O’Sullivan throughout the season. However, it is Marine Nationale who stands out as their ace in the pack. The six-year-old gelding impressed everyone by winning the Royal Bond and following it up with a stylish victory at the Cheltenham Festival.

Now, Marine Nationale embarks on a new challenge – his novice chase campaign. The first test will be in Paddy Power From The Horses Mouth Podcast Beginners Chase on December 27th. Despite being undefeated so far in his career, O’Sullivan acknowledges that topping last season will not be easy.

“He didn’t put a foot wrong,” said O’Sullivan about Marine Nationale’s progress thus far. “We are very lucky to be involved with him.” With two Grade One wins from five starts under his belt already, expectations are high for this emerging talent.

O’Sullivan recognizes that transitioning to chasing poses new hurdles and emphasizes that further development is necessary: “It’s going to be harder this time around; he will have to train even more vigorously. Nevertheless, we are eager to see him back on the racecourse.”

    A Journey Towards Cheltenham Festival?

The delayed debut in chasing could be the first step towards a return to the Cheltenham Festival for Marine Nationale. A potential rematch with Facile Vega, who finished runner-up to him in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last year, is on the cards in the Arkle.

O’Sullivan looks ahead with cautious optimism: “If Marine Nationale can maintain his form from last season and we can get him ready for Cheltenham in March, it would be an exciting prospect.” However, O’Sullivan acknowledges that replicating their Supreme success will be no easy task but assures fans they will give it their best shot.

    A Fortuitous Partnership

Marine Nationale set Michael O’Sullivan and Barry Connell’s partnership into motion when they claimed victory at Punchestown bumper back in May 2022. Little did they know then that their collaboration would lead to tremendous success over the next 18 months.

Reflecting on his first professional season, O’Sullivan expresses gratitude: “I couldn’t have asked for a better start after turning professional last September. I was fortunate enough to ride some exceptional horses for great people who provided unwavering support.”

O’Sullivan transitioned quickly from claimer status to becoming one of the most sought-after jockeys during this time. He ended his season riding for prestigious trainers such as Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott, achieving notable triumphs including a win aboard Jazzy Matty at the Cheltenham Festival.

However, it was alongside Barry Connell that O’Sullivan showcased his finest performances. The pair celebrated three Grade One victories together – twice with Marine Nationale and once with Good Land.

“To win three Grade Ones within my first professional season is truly remarkable,” says O’Sullivan with humility and appreciation. “Finding horses of such caliber and having Barry’s trust in me has been an incredible stroke of luck.”

As O’Sullivan concludes his interview, he reflects on the unpredictable nature of racing: “In this sport, luck plays a significant role. I was fortunate to receive an opportunity at the right time and make the most of it thanks to Barry Connell, as well as other trainers who have supported me along the way.”
