Potential for Dewhurst to ride Middle Park champion Vandeek remains open

Options remain open for Simon and Ed Crisford’s Vandeek after his superb Middle Park success

In a race filled with puzzlement, Vandeek emerged victorious with a two-and-a-quarter-length lead in the six-furlong Group One at Newmarket. This unbeaten colt, trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, showcased his talent on good to firm ground after triumphant performances on soft surfaces.

    A Perfect Record

Vandeek has been unstoppable so far, maintaining a flawless record of four wins from four starts. His impressive journey began with a winning debut followed by a Group Two triumph in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. He then achieved further glory by securing another Group One win in the Prix Morny at Deauville.

    An Impressive Performance

The victory at Newmarket demonstrated Vandeek’s exceptional turn of foot as he effortlessly left behind a strong field of competitors. Racing manager Chris Wall praised the colt’s ability to handle quick conditions even better than soft ground, highlighting his raw natural speed.

“The field quickened in front of him and he just shot away from them,” said Wall. “It goes to show the raw natural speed that he possesses.”

    A Calm Demeanor

In addition to his remarkable talent, Vandeek possesses an unusually calm temperament for a two-year-old sprinting colt. Unlike most horses who tend to be buzzy or electric before races, he remains half-asleep most of the time according to Wall.

“He walks around half asleep most of the time,” Wall explained. “The only thing you have to worry about is that you don’t let him fall asleep and fall on his head cantering to the start.”

    Potential Future Plans

Vandeek’s next move is yet to be determined, but possibilities include an entry in the Dewhurst or a late-season step up to seven furlongs at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

“We’re not ruling anything out at this stage,” said Wall regarding Vandeek’s future engagements.
