Potential Quick Return for Highfield Princess in Prix de l’Abbaye

Highfield Princess Looking to Bounce Back in Prix de l’Abbaye

Highfield Princess, the talented mare trained by John Quinn, is hoping to regain her winning form in the upcoming Prix de l’Abbaye. After a below-par performance at the Curragh where she finished fifth, things did not go according to plan for the even-money favorite.

The defending Flying Five Stakes champion faced unexpected obstacles during the race. From slipping on exiting the stalls to losing ground early on, Highfield Princess found herself struggling throughout. Despite her valiant effort and determination towards the finish line, she was unable to make a significant impact like she did in her previous triumph.

This disappointing result came as a surprise for fans of this consistent six-year-old sprinter who has been dominant over recent seasons. Post-race examination revealed that coughing and signs of being in season were present but deemed unrelated to her performance. Instead, it was believed that her difficulties at the start greatly affected her overall showing.

“She was absolutely fine after being scoped,” explained Quinn regarding Highfield Princess’ condition after the race. “The coughing was just mud kicked back due to her delayed start.” He further emphasized how crucial missing the break was for their star performer: “She lost control of her hind legs when coming out of the gates which put her immediately on the back foot.”

In spite of these setbacks, Highfield Princess displayed remarkable resilience by finishing respectably given all circumstances. It’s important to recognize that unforeseen occurrences can happen in racing.

The Highfield Stables team will conduct a thorough assessment of the mare before making a decision about her next race. As it stands, they have marked the Prix de l’Abbaye at ParisLongchamp on October 1 as a potential target.

“She’s feeling fine this morning,” reassured Quinn. “We’ll closely evaluate her and if she checks out okay, we will give her another chance in the Abbaye.”
