Promising Allaho poised for prestigious King George challenge

Patrick Mullins Optimistic About Allaho’s Chances in King George VI Chase

Six-time Grade One winner Allaho is set to make a bold comeback at the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, according to jockey Patrick Mullins. Owned by Cheveley Park Stud, this talented nine-year-old has shown his prowess with impressive performances in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham and a dominant victory in the Punchestown Gold Cup.

Allaho faced a setback when he was sidelined for over a year due to a rare spleen problem. However, he made a successful return in the Clonmel Oil Chase earlier this month, proving that he still retains his ability on the track.

    Mullins’ Confidence Despite Setbacks

Although there may be doubts about whether Allaho can replicate his past brilliance after such an extended break from racing, Mullins remains optimistic about their chances. He hopes to provide his father Willie with another win in the prestigious festive highlight following previous successes of Florida Pearl in 2001 and Tornado Flyer two years ago.

“Since winning the Punchestown Gold Cup and showcasing his stamina over three miles, we have had our sights set on the King George,” said Mullins confidently during an interview at Ascot last Saturday. “With his owners’ support, it feels like a perfect fit.”

Allaho has proven to excel on flat tracks over three miles, although he does have a tendency to jump slightly to the left. Mullins mentioned that Punchestown was one of his successful outings, despite this slight quirk in his jumping style.

As Allaho is now nine, approaching ten years old, and coming back from an extensive break, there are reservations about whether he can perform at his peak. However, Mullins believes that there is still a chance for him to emerge victorious in the King George VI Chase.

    A Promising Comeback

Mullins emphasised the significance of Allaho’s recent comeback victory at Clonmel Oil Chase after being underrated by spectators. He highlighted that Janidil, who finished behind Allaho in second place during this race, is also a formidable competitor.

“We’re very pleased with how he performed,” said Mullins. “His previous wins in the Ryanair Chase were truly remarkable – comparable to Vautour’s victories. It’s worth noting that Vautour narrowly missed out on winning the King George due to jumping slightly left.”

The Ladbrokes King George VI Chase will feature a six-horse field with last year’s victor Bravemansgame returning to defend his title under Paul Nicholls’ tutelage. Frodon, winner of the 2020 edition of the race with Bryony Frost as their regular partner jockey will offer strong competition alongside other contenders like Shishkin trained by Nicky Henderson and The Real Whacker.

Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle and Kauto Star Novices’ Chase

Constitution Hill is set to headline the Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle along with five other contenders including Nicholls-trained Rubaud. In the Ladbrokes Kauto Star Novices’ Chase, Il Est Francais trained by Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm will compete against five other rivals, with Nicholls’ Hermes Allen being one of the frontrunners.
