Reports from the Friday events at the Newmarket July meeting

Nashwa Shines in Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes

In a stunning display, Nashwa returned to her best form under Hollie Doyle to dominate the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. With this victory marking her seventh Group One win, Doyle faced some initial challenges during the race as she found herself momentarily trapped behind other horses. However, once given room to maneuver, Nashwa effortlessly surged ahead, leaving her competitors in awe.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, Nashwa had previously demonstrated promise with notable placings in races such as the Oaks over a mile and a half last season. She continued to impress by securing wins in Group Ones over 10 furlongs in both the Prix de Diane and Nassau Stakes. While she may have appeared lackluster earlier this season with unremarkable performances in France and downgraded competition at Newcastle, it became evident that dropping back to a mile on softer ground suited her immensely.

Astral Beau led for much of the race until Remarquee posed as a serious threat just over a furlong from home. It seemed like Ralph Beckett’s horse would replicate their success from last year’s race with Prosperous Voyage; however, Nashwa defied expectations and soared past them all with an astounding five-length lead. Remarquee settled for second place while Via Sistina finished third as the even-money favorite.

Reflecting on their triumph, Gosden senior expressed the significance of this race in Nashwa’s season. He emphasized her tactical speed and remarkable acceleration, highlighting the potential for future races such as the Nassau Stakes. The Gosden team aims to capitalize on her strengths and are open to considering prestigious events like the QEII later in the year.

Persian Dreamer Upsets Star Of Mystery in Duchess of Cambridge Stakes

In a surprising turn of events, Persian Dreamer managed to defeat Charlie Appleby’s highly-favored Star Of Mystery in an exhilarating battle during the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket. Jockey Kevin Stott ensured a thrilling birthday celebration for Amo Racing boss Kia Joorabchian with a superb ride.

With George Boughey’s Soprano withdrawn due to a medication error, it initially seemed that Appleby had an advantage with his sole contender. However, Dominic French Davis’ Thanksbutnothanks took charge early on while Star Of Mystery closely trailed behind.

Persian Dreamer, who finished fourth behind Soprano in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, delivered an impressive burst of speed when asked by jockey Kevin Stott. Surging ahead by one length and three-quarters, Persian Dreamer secured victory and provided trainer French Davis with his first Group win.

French Davis expressed relief at finally achieving success at this level after narrowly missing out previously. He praised Persian Dreamer as an exceptional filly who thrives on softer ground conditions. With aspirations for next year’s Guineas races lingering in their minds since her triumph on Rowley Mile earlier this season, he believes she possesses great potential moving forward.
