Review of Goodwood: Al Husn Surprises in Nassau Springs

Al Husn Upsets Blue Rose Cen and Nashwa to Lift the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood

In a shocking turn of events at the prestigious Qatar Nassau Stakes held at Goodwood, Al Husn emerged as the unexpected champion by defeating top contenders Blue Rose Cen and Nashwa.

Christopher Head’s Blue Rose Cen, who had previously clinched victories in the French 1000 Guineas and French Oaks, entered the race as the favorite with odds of 10-11. Meanwhile, last year’s Nassau heroine Nashwa was considered her main threat.

The early stages of the race saw Joseph O’Brien-trained Above The Curve take charge, leading from start to finish. However, it was during a critical moment in the home straight that drama ensued.

Aurelien Lemaitre, a French jockey making his debut at Goodwood on board Blue Rose Cen, attempted to make a move along the far rail but found himself blocked by Ryan Moore on Above The Curve. This left Blue Rose Cen trapped with nowhere to go behind them.

On another front, Hollie Doyle skillfully guided Nashwa away from trouble and seemed poised for victory after an impressive surge following her recent Group One triumph in last month’s Falmouth Stakes. However, her momentum waned in the final furlong.

Above The Curve maintained its lead until challenged by Al Husn ridden by Jim Crowley. Showing remarkable grit and determination, Al Husn overtook Above The Curve by half a length, with Nashwa finishing third and Blue Rose Cen closely behind in fourth.

Jim Crowley expressed his admiration for Al Husn, stating, “She’s not a big filly but she’s all heart – she tries so hard.” He also acknowledged the fortunate positioning during the race and praised Nashwa’s fighting spirit.

Trainer Roger Varian described Al Husn as a remarkable filly who has consistently outperformed her competition. Despite not being flashy, she possesses an admirable attitude and toughness that have brought her success throughout the season.

In terms of future plans for Al Husn, Varian mentioned several potential races such as Prix Jean Romanet in Deauville and Prix de l’Opera. He also hinted at the possibility of considering Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita (Breeders’ Cup), acknowledging her strong bloodline.

The victory in the Qatar Nassau Stakes marks another milestone for both Jim Crowley and trainer Roger Varian. It is a testament to their skillful partnership in harnessing Al Husn’s potential.
