Shishkin highly probable to make a comeback at Ascot this Saturday

Shishkin Likely to Line Up in Ascot’s 1965 Chase

In a surprising turn of events, it appears that Shishkin is set to compete in Ascot’s 1965 Chase this Saturday instead of the highly anticipated Betfair Chase at Haydock. The decision comes as a result of Nicky Henderson reconsidering his options due to the challenging ground conditions expected at Haydock.

Henderson had initially contemplated sending Shishkin to Haydock for a thrilling showdown with last year’s winner Protektorat and the reigning King George champion, Bravemansgame. However, upon analyzing the track and considering the soft ground, Henderson has now shifted his focus towards Ascot.

“It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that two miles five furlongs around Ascot will be more favorable for Shishkin than three miles on soft ground at Haydock,” stated Henderson confidently.

The nine-year-old gelding has already achieved incredible success over shorter distances, winning both the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Arkle during consecutive Cheltenham Festivals. Despite disappointments such as being pulled up in last year’s Champion Chase and finishing third behind Edwardstone in the Tingle Creek, Henderson decided to test Shishkin over longer trips.

    A Successful Transition

This transition proved fruitful when he secured an impressive 16-length victory over Pic D’Orhy in February’s Ascot Chase before finishing second behind Envoi Allen in the Ryanair Chase. Shishkin’s triumphant run continued at Aintree, where he tackled three miles for the first time and triumphed over Ahoy Senor to claim victory in the Bowl.

Henderson has now set his sights on the upcoming King George at Kempton on Boxing Day and considers Ascot’s 1965 Chase as a crucial stepping-stone towards that goal.

“This race serves as preparation for the King George, and our primary objective is to win it,” stated Henderson determinedly.

    Enhancing Performance

To optimize Shishkin’s performance, Henderson revealed plans to introduce cheek pieces during future races. These additional equipment have shown positive results during training sessions, helping keep Shishkin focused and motivated throughout his runs.

The rematch with Pic D’Orhy in Ascot’s 1965 Chase promises an exciting showdown between two talented competitors. As racing enthusiasts eagerly await Saturday’s race, all eyes will be on Shishkin as he aims to prove himself once again over a distance that suits him well.
