Tom Marquand marks milestone with 1,000th victory in British racing

Tom Marquand Celebrates 1,000th Winner at Windsor

Talented jockey Tom Marquand achieved a remarkable milestone in his career as he rode his 1,000th winner on home soil aboard Five Towns at Windsor on Monday evening. This achievement further solidifies his reputation as one of the finest jockeys around.

The 25-year-old had already surpassed this figure in both Britain and Ireland but reaching this significant mark in front of a home crowd was truly special for him. It was fitting that he accomplished this feat while riding a filly trained by none other than his boss, William Haggas.

Marquand embarked on his professional journey under the guidance of Richard Hannon back in 2014. Within just a year, at the tender age of 18, he emerged victorious as the champion apprentice—an impressive accomplishment to kick off his career.

In 2017, Marquand secured his first Group-level success when Anna Nerium triumphed in Salisbury’s Dick Poole Stakes. However, it wasn’t until last year that he claimed his maiden Group One victory—a deserving recognition after honing his skills during an extended period spent racing in Australia.

Nicknamed “Aussie Tom,” Marquand formed a successful partnership with William Haggas’ Addeybb and together they clinched three major race wins Down Under. They later tasted victory in the prestigious Champion Stakes at Ascot in 2020.

Shortly after this triumph, Marquand achieved another milestone by securing his first Classic success as he expertly steered Joseph O’Brien’s Galileo Chrome to victory in the St Leger at Doncaster. This showcased both his adaptability and skill on different horses.

Earlier this year, Marquand etched his name into Royal Ascot history by guiding Haggas’ Desert Hero to win the King George V Stakes. The race marked a poignant moment as it was the first time since the passing of the late Queen that her colors had been carried to victory at such a significant event.

In 2022, Marquand tied the knot with fellow jockey Hollie Doyle. Currently sitting second and third respectively behind William Buick in this season’s jockeys’ championship standings, both Marquand and Doyle continue to make waves in their racing careers.

“It’s fantastic,” exclaimed Marquand . He expressed gratitude for all those who have supported him throughout his journey, acknowledging that reaching 1,000 winners requires an incredible amount of effort from both himself and everyone around him.
