Vauban team optimistic about their chances in Melbourne Cup

Connections of Vauban Harbour High Hopes Ahead of Tuesday’s Race

In a race filled with uncertainties and surprises, all eyes are on Vauban as he prepares to face his moment of destiny in the prestigious Lexus Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday.

The Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old has captured the attention of many, emerging as the frontrunner for this Group One handicap event after flawlessly transitioning from hurdles to Flat racing. With three impressive victories at the highest level over hurdles under his belt, Vauban seems poised for success.

A dominant winner by seven-and-a-half lengths in the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot, Vauban continued his winning streak by claiming Group Three gold in the Ballyroan Stakes during his prep run. Jockey Ryan Moore is optimistic about their chances in this 24-runner race and believes that luck may be on their side.

“Being housed in stall number three could prove advantageous, but it’s important not to dwell too much on these factors,” said Moore. “Vauban possesses exceptional credentials that rival any other contender like Gold Trip or Without A Fight.”

Moore further added, “While some may question whether he deserves such short odds given the nature of this highly competitive handicap race where luck plays a significant role, I simply focus on riding them. As far as I’m concerned, being aboard a 5-2 favorite is far more favorable than a 50-1 outsider. Additionally, Vauban’s impressive performances at Royal Ascot and Naas have given me great confidence in his abilities.”

Willie Mullins shares Moore’s optimism, considering Vauban and stablemate Absurde as his strongest contenders yet for the Melbourne Cup. Having previously achieved second place with Max Dynamite in 2015 and third place two years later, Mullins believes Vauban might even surpass their previous achievements.

“Vauban is on par with Max Dynamite, if not better,” stated Mullins confidently. “This year presents our best opportunity to win the Melbourne Cup. Let’s not forget about Absurde either, who had a magnificent victory in the Ebor under Frankie Dettori.”

A Race Filled With Familiar Names

This year may lack British-trained runners, but there are plenty of notable names competing for glory on Tuesday. Ciaron Maher and David Eustace field last year’s winner Gold Trip once again while Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott present Serpentine, the hero of the 2020 Derby. Chris Waller brings last year’s Irish Oaks champion Magical Lagoon to this prestigious event.

Joseph O’Brien’s Okita Soushi stands as the sole European contender amidst a predominantly Australian lineup.

Hollie Doyle Aims for Historic Win

Intriguingly enough, jockey Hollie Doyle has an incredible chance to join Michelle Payne as one of only two women who have won the Melbourne Cup. Her mount Future History offers her an exciting opportunity to etch her name into history books.

“I am thrilled to be riding in the Cup aboard Future History. It’s a fantastic chance for both me and the connections,” shared Doyle eagerly. “With only 50kg to carry, anything can happen in this race, but luck will undoubtedly play a crucial role.”

Doyle expressed her excitement about the upcoming challenge and acknowledged the support she has received from owner Peter Trainor. She is determined to make her first attempt at winning this prestigious event an unforgettable one.

The stage is set for an exhilarating Lexus Melbourne Cup as Vauban faces his biggest test yet against formidable opponents. With high hopes resting on his shoulders and top jockey Ryan Moore guiding him, all eyes will be on Flemington Racecourse come Tuesday.
