Wimbledon 2023: Roger Federer, the legendary eight-time champion, celebrated in special Centre Court event

Roger Federer Receives Special Honor at Wimbledon

Eighth-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer was embraced by the adoring Centre Court crowd on day two of the tournament in a remarkable ceremony commemorating his incredible achievements.

The Swiss tennis maestro, who holds an astounding collection of 20 Grand Slam titles, received a thunderous ovation as he descended the steps of the prestigious Royal Box. Invited as a special guest to witness Tuesday’s thrilling matches, Federer was accompanied by his wife and family. The Princess of Wales, who serves as patron for All England Tennis Club, also joined them in celebrating this extraordinary occasion.

Federer’s legacy at Wimbledon is legendary. His dominance between 2003 and 2007 resulted in five consecutive championship victories. He further solidified his status with additional triumphs in 2009, 2012, and most recently in 2017 when he surpassed Pete Sampras’ record by securing his eighth title.

In tribute to this exceptional athlete’s journey throughout the years, Centre Court ticket holders were treated to a captivating video montage showcasing Federer’s evolution from his first triumphant moment at Wimbledon back in 2003 until his last epic conquest in 2017.

The homage continued as Federer graciously accepted a guard of honor while seated alongside royalty within the Royal Box. As he smiled and waved appreciatively towards the crowd that erupted into applause and cheers for one of tennis’ greatest icons.

With an astounding 103 ATP titles and a staggering 310 weeks as the world’s number one player, Federer has undeniably captured the hearts of British fans. The standing ovation lasted for several minutes, a testament to the enduring adoration he commands.

Unfortunately, the eager crowd of approximately 15,000 was disappointed that Federer did not address them directly. Play resumed promptly after an announcer expressed gratitude to Federer for providing countless cherished memories to Wimbledon enthusiasts over the years.

This ceremony marked another highlight in Federer’s remarkable career at Wimbledon. Last year, he was among several former champions honored during a commemorative event celebrating 100 years of Centre Court.

Federer then took his seat beside the Princess of Wales to eagerly witness further action on Centre Court. The day commenced with Elena Rybakina defending her title against American Shelby Rogers while seven-time women’s singles champion Serena Williams, who retired last year and is currently pregnant at 41-years-old, regretfully could not attend as she was unable to travel.
