WTA Finals: Jessica Pegula remains undefeated, while Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina face a delay in their progress

Jessica Pegula progresses to the WTA Finals semi-finals with perfect record

American tennis player Jessica Pegula has secured her place in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals with a flawless performance so far. She has won all three of her matches in Cancun, Mexico, maintaining a perfect record throughout.

On her way to securing her spot in the last four, Pegula defeated Greek player Maria Sakkari 6-3 6-2. Despite already qualifying for the next stage of the tournament, Pegula showed no signs of slowing down and dominated her opponent.

In another match at the WTA Finals, world number one Aryna Sabalenka was leading against Elena Rybakina before play was suspended due to bad weather conditions. Sabalenka led 6-2 3-5 when play paused and will resume serving to level the match when they continue on Friday.

The winner between Sabalenka and Rybakina will advance to join Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. The other matches taking place on Friday include Iga Swiatek facing Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff playing Marketa Vondrousova in order to determine who will progress from their group.

Pegula’s impressive performance marks historic moment for American tennis

This achievement by Jessica Pegula is particularly significant as it is her first time reaching the semi-finals at this prestigious season-ending tournament. In fact, she becomes the first American player since Sloane Stephens in 2018 to make it into the final four.

Reflecting on her stunning performance, Pegula expressed her excitement at achieving a 3-0 record and reaching the semi-finals. She acknowledged that this accomplishment holds special meaning for her, especially considering the challenges she faced in the previous year.

Sabalenka’s dominance halted by weather interruption

In the match between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, Belarusian top seed Sabalenka initially took control and secured the first set with a double break. However, play was suspended due to poor weather conditions when Rybakina bounced back from being a break down to take a 5-3 lead in the second set.

The players left the court late into the night after more than three hours of intense tennis. The match will resume on Friday as Rybakina serves to force a decisive third set against Sabalenka.

Moreover, if Sabalenka reaches the final of this tournament, she is poised to retain her world number one ranking in women’s tennis.
