A Remarkable Triumph by Zoe Backstedt
In an awe-inspiring display of skill and determination, British cyclist Zoe Backstedt claimed the gold medal in the women’s Under-23 time trial at the Road European Championships. The eighteen-year-old prodigy from Wales left her competitors trailing in her wake, finishing a staggering 57.51 seconds ahead of German contender Antonia Niedermaier.
The podium was completed by Finland’s Anniina Ahtosalo, who crossed the finish line a further 35.96 seconds behind Niedermaier to secure third place. This exhilarating race took place in Drenthe, Netherlands.
Rising Star with an Impressive Track Record
Zoe Backstedt has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in time-trial events. In addition to her recent triumph at the Road European Championships, she clinched the World Junior time trial gold medal earlier this year. Another promising Welsh cyclist, Joshua Tarling, also achieved this remarkable feat.
Additionally, Backstedt secured two silver medals at February’s Cyclocross World Championships and showcased her skills by attaining fifth position during September’s Simac Ladies Tour.
A Cycling Legacy within Her Family
Cycling runs deep within Zoe Backstedt’s family roots. Her older sister Elynor competes for Pro tour team Lidl-Trek, while her father Magnus left an indelible mark on the sport. Magnus triumphed in a stage of the Tour de France back in 1998 and also emerged victorious at the prestigious Paris-Roubaix monument race in 2004.
Zoe even used her father’s winning pedals during her mesmerizing ride across the cobbles of Roubaix in 2023.

Elinor Barker from Cardiff and Joshua Tarling continue to shine on cycling’s grand stage as they participate in the senior men’s and women’s categories respectively at the European Championships. Tarling aims to build upon his current accolades, including a World time trial bronze medal and British time trial gold.
