Nasova released from Newcastle contract
Fijian wing Joji Nasova will remain with the Drua after Newcastle Red Bulls agreed to release him from his signed contract for next season. The 25-year-old had been set to join the ambitious Premiership club but the move has collapsed due to what the club described as personal reasons.
Nasova impressed with four tries in three appearances for Fiji and earned a sevens silver medal at the Paris Olympics. His form had attracted interest from Newcastle, who had announced his signing earlier in the year.
Newcastle general manager Neil McIlroy said the club fully understood and respected the unique personal circumstances behind the decision. He emphasized that while contractual certainty matters, the club’s responsibility extends beyond the field to people, families and communities.
McIlroy wished Nasova, his family and the Fijian Drua every success for the future. The release means the Olympic medalist will continue his career in Fiji rather than making the switch to English rugby.
