Rooney Honors Mersey Row Promise on the Hudson
Wayne Rooney traded his pundit microphone for an oar and rowed on the Hudson River in New York after Norway beat Brazil 2-1 in the World Cup last 16. The former England striker had pledged during that round to row down the River Mersey if Norway defeated the five-time champions, and he confirmed live on air that he would take on the challenge in the US once the result stood.
Pundits Take to the Water
Rooney was joined by fellow pundits Joe Hart and Micah Richards, who also swapped commentary duties for rowing. “I loved it,” Rooney said. “The fans were brilliant. So we’ve done it out of respect for the fans.” Norway fans’ viking row became a sensation at the tournament, and striker Erling Haaland was keen to see Rooney in action, saying: “Wayne, I expect you to go out on a rowing trip.”
Norway Exit, Pundits Return for Final
Norway were knocked out by England in the quarter-finals, ending their run before the last weekend. Rooney, Hart and Richards will be back on dry land alongside Gabby Logan for Sunday’s World Cup final at 20:00 BST, which will be available to watch live on television and streaming.
Remaining Fixtures
Before that final, England meet France in the World Cup third-place match on Saturday at 22:00, also broadcast live on television and streaming. When the World Cup finishes, the football continues across coverage platforms.
