González Shows Growth in Summer League Finale
Hugo González closed his Summer League run with a standout performance against Sacramento. He posted 24 points and 10 rebounds. He also added five assists. Boston won 82-76. Celtics assistant Amile Jefferson noted the second-year forward has worked on all facets of his game this offseason. Jefferson added that González has physically matured into a bigger presence capable of defending positions one through five. The assistant emphasized that González’s professional approach began well before the team reconvened in Las Vegas.
González carried that momentum into international play with the Spanish national team during FIBA qualifying in July. He scored 16 points against Denmark while head coach Joe Mazzulla attended to evaluate his progress. Last season he established himself as an elite defensive option. He handled assignments that included Giannis Antetokounmpo in March. His value within the organization became evident when president of basketball operations Brad Stevens refused to include González in trade discussions centered on the Greek Freak.
Second-Year Expectations Rise
González averaged 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds last season. He played 14.6 minutes per game. He finished 13th in All-Rookie voting. He earned trust as a defensive sparkplug for a 56-win team. His 36 percent three-point shooting and limited off-the-dribble creation remain primary areas for improvement as Boston seeks greater depth contributions across the roster. The 28th overall pick enters his second campaign with 74 NBA appearances already under his belt.
Teammates and coaches have consistently praised González’s energy and work ethic since training camp. Jordan Walsh and Baylor Scheierman highlighted his professional approach as a rookie. Guard John Tonje described him as one of the loudest voices in the room. Tonje said González brings constant enthusiasm that elevated team morale during Spain’s successful World Cup run. González will turn his attention to Sunday’s matchup as the Celtics wrap up their Las Vegas schedule.
