Ben Duckett struck 141 off 135 balls. It was the biggest men’s ODI individual score at the ground. Jacob Bethell fell nine short of a century. Their opening stand reached 192.

Joe Root added an unbeaten 74 from 48 deliveries. It was his sixth consecutive fifty-plus score in the format. Jos Buttler finished with a blistering 41 not out off 13 balls. The hosts reached 383 for three.

Rohit Sharma’s farewell falls short

India chased what would have been the second-highest successful target in ODI history. Rohit Sharma made a magnificent 138 from 111 balls. The 39-year-old is widely expected to retire after the series. He shared a 147-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill. Gill made 77.

Rohit’s dismissal in the 38th over proved the turning point. He was bowled round his legs by Bethell. The required run rate climbed beyond reach.

Virat Kohli fought a lone hand with 74. He fell caught in the covers off Sam Curran. Curran finished with four for 75.

India’s lower order continued to strike boundaries but finished on 360 for seven.

The match became only the second ODI to feature century opening stands from both sides. England’s stand also set a new record for the hosts at Lord’s and their highest ever against India.

England’s openers had begun the series with modest returns but found complete control on a surface where India’s bowlers struggled for length. Their 27 runs from the first three overs set the highest ever start at the venue in ODIs. They batted through the opening 20 overs without loss for the first time since the 2019 World Cup triumph. Root’s consistency and Buttler’s late assault ensured the total proved just beyond India’s grasp despite Rohit’s heroics.
